How to dodge discount disasters during EOFY sales

It’s that time of year when the shopping gods bless us with the glorious EOFY sales. But hold your horses, my lovely!

Amidst the apparent blessings is a fashion frenzy that can have even the most savvy shopper falling over their stilettos and stumbling into some of the most nasty shopping pitfalls. As a seasoned personal stylist, I’ve witnessed the chaos (and even the occasional red-faced tussle) that can unfold during a sale, leaving shoppers with deep regrets (for all the reasons) instead of a put together collection of life-ready looks.

If you’d prefer to avoid the discount driven disasters read on for some tongue-in-chic style wisdom!

Shop with intention

Picture this – you enter the battlefield of discounts without a strategy; like a style warrior without a map. Avoid this fashion fail, by first arming yourself with an intentional, prioritised shopping list. It’s your wardrobe’s battle plan, guiding you towards the worthily discounted pieces you truly need as opposed to the lip-stick stained teaser that is just a tad too small but you could probably squeeze into on a non-hormonal day. Urgh.

Beware the discount deception

Ah, the sweet allure of “70% off” beckoning like a siren in a sea of style confusion. But like the siren, not every discount is as delightful as it first seems. Head off the seduction of a sale by developing a strong understanding of your style identity. This way you can confidently seek out the hidden gems that align with your style message, while leaving the fashion fool’s gold in your wake.

Know the returns policy

Even the most cool, calm and collected sales shopper can end up buying what seemed like a dazzling ensemble, only to find it doesn’t quite work in the day to day of life. Alas, most returns policies exclude sales items. Ensure your apparent shopping win doesn’t end in retail remorse, by reading the fine print or asking the question. Having said that, I can almost guarantee that there will be no return on sales. 

Quality over quantity. Every time

Let’s talk ‘fabrication’ dahling! Even the most heavily discounted and seemingly swoon-worthy item won’t be worth it if it feels like sandpaper against your skin or could potentially go up in flames at the strike of a match. Don’t compromise on quality for the sake of a short-term ‘saving’. Especially when there are fabulous savings to be had on investment items such as leather pants/skirts/jackets, seasonal coats, shoes and handbags. Pay more for a quality discount now and reap the benefits for a long time to come.
